What is 5S System?

The 5S System is a methodology used to organize and maintain a workplace in a manner that improves efficiency, safety, and cleanliness. Originating from Japan, the system is named after five Japanese words, each beginning with the letter “S.” These principles guide organizations to eliminate waste, optimize processes, and create a structured environment.

The five components/pillars of the 5S System are:

  • Sort (Seiri): The first step involves removing all unnecessary items from the workplace. This may include old equipment, outdated materials, or anything that does not add value to the current operations. Employees should be involved in identifying what can be discarded or relocated.
